Advice to the smaller shop owners in this tough economic climate?
There will be a lot of pressure to sell on price. There will be a lot of pressure to do work on spec, or jump through ridiculous hoops. There will be a lot of pressure to think that the bad client in the hand is better than the great client in the bush. But there are only 3 reasons to have a client – great work, lots of money, great fun. Ideally your client provides you with all three. But if they’re not providing you with any of those things, they’re not a client. They’re a black hole. And that’s true in any economy.

Although I am a fan of a couple of these commercials – the key word here is that they are mainly all commercials – and that I am not a fan of. Goviral needs to rethink this batch.

2009 Media Elements

In 2009 I averaged just over 69 captured media elements a day which is directly on par with the last three years.

I shot 9,582 videos and 14,304 photos on the canon. 1,421 came from the iPhone which is no longer a daily pocket device for me.

TJ Fry – on Ad Agencies

“Mitsubishi contacts an ad agency about making a commercial. A budget is established. Then, depending on the budget, the agency assigns a number of people to the job. They contact production companies who bid on the job. They select a company who spends the money to hire the crew that stands around all day and complains about their overtime rate and meal penalties while they eat sushi from the catered lunch, all the while sitting next to me, making $200 a day before taxes on a flat rate whether I work 10 hours or 20 hours that day. Fuck em! Fuck the whole system and everyone in it. It’s outdated, unnecessary, and needs to be fixed.

No one wants to fix it though because they all make their living doing this shit. They all bring home the bread from this bullshit and piss on the little guys like me who work the hardest out of anyone there because we are expendable. But that shit is going to come to an end. My goal is to come up with a new process to get it done with all 3 of the options that you can supposedly only have 2 of. We are going to get it done fast, cheap, and with quality. Digital allows us to do that but the unions and the people stuck in their ways don’t allow that to happen. Let’s eliminate the ad agencies. fuck em. Cinematographer? How about he runs the camera because it’s digital and easy to work with. One guy who does lighting. One who directs. And one who helps with camera, lighting, and rigging. There it is 4-5 guys shooting a commercial. Suddenly 20 grand doesn’t sound so bad. Or fuck. Even do it for HALF price and do $100,000! There you go! Now we’re talking. Hire pro talent, rent pro equipment, have sushi for lunch, and do crack out of strippers titties when we go home to our fucking mansions. Let’s change film forever. I’m deadly serious.”

TJ Fry – on Hollywood

“The Hollywood system is dying bro. Everybody and their mothers are shooting RED or Grass Valley Viper. Digital is the way its going now. But even so, these people still try to maintain the same shit the film requires. There is no need for A cinematographer, a camera operator, a 1st Assistant Cameraman, 2nd AC, clapper/loader, and a film runner (who has no film to run by the way, just a hard drive or DVDs) on the same shoot. And it’s like that in all the departments. With Digital you can get shit done faster, easier, and cheaper than film. Thats the fucking point and Hollywood doesn’t get it yet. Because of the fucking UNIONS! The union shoots mandate that grips handle diffusion, c stands, and direction/color/type of light, while not touching the actual lights themselves. That is the GAFFERS’ job. They are the only people who can touch lights. But who runs the cables for the lights? Only ELECTRICIANS are allowed to do that! Dude the whole system is so antiquated and inefficient it hurts me to think about it. And don’t even get me started on Ad Agencies. What a fucking joke.”
