Warren Miller is Free Again

It’s been a long time coming — but now it’s final. Warren Miller officially owns his own name again. He just needs to stay away from using it around skiing. What does this mean? It means… that even though Warren Miller Entertainment (the film company) may have won the battle. Warren Miller (the man) won the war.

Here is a recap of what began last year beginning with the release of Level 1 Productions 10th film Refresh.

Level 1 — Warren Miller “Refresh” Intro Segment Finally Legally Released

Level 1 Refresh Intro Segment from Level 1 on Vimeo.

The intro segment for Level 1’s 2009 release, Refresh!

About Refresh:
10 years deep and still not satisfied –

Never before has the sport of skiing changed and progressed so much, so quickly, as it has over the past decade. With changes in equipment, accessibility of terrain, and most importantly the mindset of some of the world’s best athletes, skiing today is not what it once was… An integral part of these recent changes, Level 1 looks back and challenges perspectives of where the sport has come from, and where it’s going in their tenth-anniversary offering, “Refresh.” Keeping true to their humble roots while exploring every arena that skiing has to offer the Level 1 crew serves up the most diverse ski entertainment to date. New things will never get old- fresh images of big jumps, deep powder, technical urban exploits, steep lines, and memorable terrain park action with a collection of the sport’s best and brightest talent.

Turn out, tune on, and drop in.

Skiing’s counterculture continues to buck the trends of what’s come before them- this is a worldwide documentation of ski action as you’ve never seen it presented before.

Follow the Level 1 crew as they experiment with one of the largest gap jumps ever built in Sun Valley, Idaho, hit a record snowfall in Helsinki, Finland, and harvest the vast resources of Alaska… or perhaps it’s all just a lucid dream?

Wake up, because Level 1 will take you on the visual trip of a lifetime. Come along for the ride!

Holy F*ck!

Worlds Largest Naked Front Flip… Good find Nate Warner via JF Cusson via Jen Crichton.

From what I have gathered – Some guy named Nico Zacek throws this event called Nine Knights. Skiers (Oscar Scherlin, Henrik Harlaut, Laurent Favre, Mikael Descenaux, the best British rider Paddy Graham, and the top Austrian/German riders Fabio Studer, Thomas Hlawitschka, Martin Misof and Nico Zacek) jump the castle. Photographers (Mattias Fredriksson, Klaus Polzer, Elina Sirparanta, Yarrek) photograph the jump. And everyone parties.

Until this guy blows the wind through his balls on a massive crack open front fly to flat. Teddy Berr – I know you have balls, but are they still intact?

Ryan St.Onge = Olympic Almost Gold

Be sure to watch Ryan St.Onge win gold in freestyle aerials tonight.

We have a futurist in Vancouver who has already snapped his gold medal winning jump celebration. I shot my prediction 2 years ago. Unfortunately some jumpers behind him pushed him down to 4th – but your still first in my book.

Congratulations Ryan. Now go miss your flight home for a burrito.

Thoughts on professional skier CR Johnson

ESPN and friend – Micah Abrams writes:

“Twenty-six-year-old C.R. Johnson was killed today while skiing at Squaw Valley, Calif. According to a statement issued by the resort, the Lake Tahoe native caught an edge on exposed rocks while entering the Light Towers area above the Cornice II lift. He fell through rocks before coming to a rest several hundred yards below the entry. Ski Patrol were on the scene within minutes, but efforts to revive Johnson failed. He was reportedly wearing a helmet.” [Read Full article]

Hydle:
It is very sad to hear another icon in the sport pass away. CR dodged a bullet back in 2005 with a traumatic brain injury and now this? Very unfortunate. I highly suggest reading the words of Christopher Jerard (first link below) to not only recap the life of CR – but more importantly to familiarize yourself with how CR adapted his viewpoints about life after his injury in 2005. Very powerful words Chris. Thank you for sharing.

Warren Miller receives Lifetime Achievement Award

January 30th, 2010

Warren Miller saves a rough start to Powder magazine’s 2010 video awards in Aspen, CO.

Warren’s concept of relating skiing to freedom has been around since the 50s – and here we are 60 years later finally soaking it in.

Working with Warren over the last year was truly an inspiring and life changing project for me. If you have yet to see Level 1 Productions 10th film – Refresh – Stop by the house and enjoy a beer along with your very own personal screening.

Little guy Level 1 was nominated for 6 awards. But following traditional patterns when dealing with large sponsor based awards ceremonies… Refresh didn’t walk with any.

Warren… I can’t wait to read the autobiography and pick up a copy of your new golf cartoon book. How long until it hits the shelf?
