Nabor Spencer — An Artists Rendition

On March 23rd, 2011 we had a friend hit the hospital due to an unknown circumstance. Below is a transcript of our email conversations along with an artist’s conception of present Spencer vs. future Spencer by John Kelly.

Does anybody know how our friend is doing?

Besides the text last night I haven’t heard anything.

I have inquired…no response.

I did not recieve this text last night. What did it say?

All I remember is he can fart out his penis.

I got a text from him… He is feeling fine. He is going to have to have surgery and he will be in the hospital for a week and a half. I will try to find out which hospital.

Surfing – Kelly Slater 11x World Champion

[YouTubular!] <— 305,748

Quiksilver’s Kelly Slater clinched an historic and unprecedented 11th ASP World Title today in the cold and challenging waters of San Francisco’s Ocean Beach. Slater, 39, is the first surfer to achieve 11 ASP World Titles, an accomplishment spanning two decades of an astounding career during which he has dominated competitive surfing as both the youngest and oldest ASP World Champion.

Good find Jim – thanks for the share.

Hugh MacLeod – Begin or End

There are few things sadder than seeing someone give up. And by the same token, seeing someone walk through life waiting to wake up. These people want something out of life, but they can’t put their finger on it, and so they wait. They wait for something to simply fall out of the sky and many times (if not always) their wait is in vain.

I don’t want to get into a discussion about fate or whatever that would imply for a person in this situation, but sometimes one has to decide to live. Not for someone or something else–but solely for their own happiness and contentment.
It can be hard, sometimes, to get out of this mindset, that things will just happen or work themselves out on their own. We have infinite potential to change our impact on the world and with the people around us.

All one has to do is act.

Pushing the Limits

[YouTubular] <— 11,243 This is a very good look into the mindsets of todays action sports athlete. I will continue to look into why this video was produced and for what event... I believe it was X-Games oriented back in 2009 - And can you believe what has happened in the last 2 years? When does the reset button get pressed? Project Montana

I just returned from a week long project in Montana. Lets just say spirits are lifted again and it’s time to tell a new story. This year is all about family. To view this project in creation – I would suggest grabbing your tickets to the 11th annual Craig Hospital PUSH dinner on March 2nd, 2012 here.

Seth Godin – Worth it?

Subscribe to the good words of Seth Godin

That’s a question you hear a lot. “Was it worth it?”

Not certain what either “it” refers to, but generally we’re saying, “was the destination worth the journey? Was the effort worth the reward?”

The thing about effort is that effort is its own reward if you allow it to be.

So the answer can always be “yes” if you let it.

Seth Godin – Questions for a New Entrepreneur

Subscribe to the good words of Seth Godin

A few things came up over coffee the other day. His idea is good, his funding is solid, there are many choices. Some of the questions that don’t usually get asked:

Are you aware of your cash flow? The thing about a fish in the stream is that it doesn’t care if the water is six inches deep or a foot deep. As long as it never (ever) goes to zero, it’s fine. What’s your zero point? What are you doing to ensure you get to keep swimming?

Are you trying to build profit or equity? A business that builds a brand, a footprint, a standard and an audience might end up being worth millions (witness Tumblr, which has many millions of value but zero profitabilty). On the other hand, a business with no exit value at all might spin off plenty of profit (consider the local doctor’s office). It would be great if you could simultaneously maximize both the value of your company and the profit it produces (in the short run), but that’s unlikely.

What’s your role? Do you want to be a freelancer, an entrepreneur or a business owner? A business owner is the boss, but it’s a job, a place that is stable and profitable. An entrepreneur is an artist of sorts, throwing herself into impossible situations and seeking out problems that require heart and guts to solve. Both are fine, but choose.

Are you trying to build a team? Some business owners want to minimize cost and hassle. Others are trying to forge a culture, to train and connect and lead.

Which kind of risk is okay with you? There’s financial risk, emotional risk and brand risk (among others). Are you willing to put your chips on the table daily? How about your personal reputation?

And finally, and most important, why? Why are you doing this at all?

Hugh MacLeod — Infinite Market

This is a revisit to a previous cartoon which inspired Seth Godin to write a book…

My friend Seth Godin said it perfectly, “What do marketers sell that scales? I’ll tell you what: Belief. Belonging. Mattering. Making a difference. Tribes. We have an unlimited need for this.”

JP Auclair – Alpine Initiatives – Inspire

[Vimeeeeeo] <— 3,256 A year ago I challenged JP Auclair to take the time and make a show reel that encapsulates what Alpine Initiatives does for the launch of their new website. It's a difficult task - because to make something great takes a lot of time and organization... all while you are super busy doing other things — and JP is always busy doing other things.

Las week the new AI Site launched with this video as their visual point.

Congratulations JP. You have inspired. Now it is time to connect and grow. In the coming month we will announce a partnership between Alpine Initiatives and Blackbox Case that will continue this exploration.
