March 1st, 2010 – Training for season 2 of long drive begins.
Long Drivers of America (LDA) local qualifiers are popping up all over with the first major event coming up March 25-27th in Mesquite, Nevada. The 2010 Diamond in the Desert Classic requires zero pre-registration and will consist of 2 days of open qualifying to create a competitive field for Saturdays Desert Classic final.
New to the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship sponsorship team this year is Dick’s Sporting Goods and the Slazenger RAW Extreme Distance golf ball. I don’t know what happened to Pinnacle as the official golf ball of the LDA – maybe it just wasn’t extreme enough. Personally – I’m a fan of aggressive.
So if your bored of the snow… lets go hang with the Mesquitos and start swinging.

Today Tom Ericson and I opened a new course in Mesquite, Nevada.
Conestoga Golf Club, a Troon Golf course is nestled deep into the desert beauty of Mesquite, Nevada. Located inside the Del Web retirement community called Sun City Mesquite … one may think this golf course may play easier then most due to the -um demographics… but Conestoga is in no way a retirement caliber course.
The 7200+ yard course rates a 74.9 and slopes in at 147 from the backs … needless to say – it kicked my ass. Here are some photos for your enjoyment.
Mesquite, Nevada – Home of the the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championships and apparently also to my new girlfriend Roxann Deese. Below is a photo montage of what I am seeing and doing during this week of “jut hit the ball far” festivities.
Checked out some real estate.
Met the Duke who is a bible on golf in Mesquite, Nevada.
He built the Casablanca course back in 1995.
Hit the range at Casablanca.
Drank some CLLs (Coors Light Limes)
Enjoyed beautiful sunset.
Met friends Jason Frey (The Savage) and Jason Zuback (The Champion).
To sum everything I have learned in one giant sentence…
“In order to win $250,000 at the world finals you need to first spend $40 for 6 balls and qualify in a local qualifier which will send you to a $150 entry fee regional championship and if you smack it hard there you will secure one of the 150 available spots to compete against the best of the best at the Mesquite Regional Park firing range where you will spend 3 days of bracketed competition to hopefully reach the head to head final rounds where ultimately you will face last years 20 year old 418 yard drive champion, Jamie Sadlowski who is only 5’10” tall 170lbs but has the ability to double wrist cock and generate ball speed greater then 210 miles per hour off the face of the club and pretty much the only thing you have going for you now is the fact that Jamie only lands 20% of his shots in the 450 yard long 50 yard wide grid which equates to only 1.2 balls out of 6… I hope he misses.”
Thanks to YouTube for providing endless golf tips on how to hit the ball farther. I don’t think I will ever have the Canadian 98mph lefty slapshot that Jamie has… but I do have the power of the internets.
