HYDLE – Constant Reminder

I have recently written about why, within human nature… does it take something to end, like death – for others to begin caring? And in reading someones last work – how chilling it is to often find how someone has experienced something of a higher power only days before they have passed.

My constant reminder right now is the remarkable story of Nicole Davis. Who is still alive today and deserves the celebration and caring now.

On New Years Eve my brother Jeremy hosted a fundraiser in Nicole’s name trying to break the world record for the number of tattoos done in a 24-hour period. His tattoo artist KAOS fell short of the record (802) at 656 but the benefit was far from failing. I personally worked a large chunk of the 24 hour event and was blown away by the stories and meaning behind every breast cancer support ribbon KAOS tattooed.

It seems to me that everybody has a cause, a benefit, a request for donation… but it’s very rare when people actually take the time to read into and experience the real stories of the people effected before or after they choose to make a donation. Maybe this is due to the saturation of how many thousands of causes we are bombarded with supporting… it’s easy to shut the door. But in the case of Nicole Davis and her beautiful family, I challenge you to read this recent story. She is still alive with us today and has an amazing story to share.

Hugh MacLeod – More To Life

To paraphrase Seneca, the tragedy isn’t that life is short, the tragedy is that we waste so much of it.

The other types of tragedy, the more violent kind, never worry me too much, thankfully. I never lost much sleep, worrying about wars or serial killers or whatever.

But getting to the end of my life and realizing that I had wasted most of it, that idea froze my blood.

As it should…

JP Auclair – Movie Time

I recently exchanged some quick emails with JP Auclair to see what he has been up to. Fall is approaching so I wanted to find out what movies I could expect his involvement in this year.

Below is a quick list of where he has been spending his skiing and editing time.

Sherpas Cinema – All.I.Can

I got involved with the sherpas later on… So , no involvement in the teaser. But I shot with them quite a bit last winter, mostly for a urban segment, we shot it with a slightly different approach then I’d been doing in the past (the seg will be about 4 minutes) I’m pretty excited about it.

And right now I’m trying to help out with the movie as a whole, so I’ve became pretty invested in it. Really cool project!

Restricted Access on Clear Creek Lifted

Exciting Day for Golden!

Single-chambered devices allowed

Jefferson County, Co. – Effective at 9 a.m. on Monday, August 1st, the Jefferson County Sheriff’s Office lifted restrictions that previously limited waterway activities on Clear Creek. The boundaries affected by the order had extended from Jeffco’s western border at State Highway 119, and eastward along the canyon through the city limits of Golden to Vanover Park.

All single-chambered air inflated devices such as belly boats, inner tubes and single chambered rafts, as well as body surfers and swimming were restricted due to the high flow rate of Clear Creek. As the flow rate has decreased, water activities involving those devices will be allowed back on the creek.

Although the risk has diminished, it is still at the high end of the average annual rate, and all users are encouraged to observe extreme caution due to the safety concerns surrounding swift moving water and floating debris.

OK Go – All is Not Lost

OK – quick review – Wow.
OK – not so quick review – Another randomly great video from OK Go with very super creative techniques, angles, ideas and messaging.

How do they keep doing it? I’m not a fan of ever becoming a sellout – but given time and specific reasons it does make sense. So even though OK Go has definitely sold out to some very large brands in the past – including State Farm and now Google Chrome and Nintendo 3DS – I’m going to say I’m ok with it if it allows them to continue their creative endeavors and messages of hope. But how about another video for your actual fans and just for the hell of it?

OK Go.

On another note – where is the OK Go Google Chrome “The web is what you make of it” advertisement? [Justin Bieber got one] <— 1,209,010. And so did [Lady Gaga] <— 3,237,345

Easy vs. Do-Able vs. Impossible

Subscribe to the good words of Seth Godin

Often we consider an opportunity based on how easy it is. The problem with this analysis is that if it’s easy, it’s often not worth doing. It’s easy to start a blog, but of course, starting a blog doesn’t really deliver a lot of value. Posting 4,100 blog posts in a row, though, isn’t easy. It’s do-able, clearly do-able, and might just be worth it.

Successful organizations seek out the do-able. When Amazon went after the big bookstore chains, analysts ridiculed them for doing something insanely difficult. But it was clearly do-able. Persistence and talent and a bit of luck, sure, but do-able.

Sometimes we seek out things that are actually impossible. Building a search engine that’s just like Google but better is impossible (if your goal is to dominate the market with it). It’s fun to do impossible projects because then you don’t have to worry about what happens if you succeed… you have a safety net, because you’re dreaming the impossible dream.

Do-able, though, is within our reach. Ignore easy.

Harlan Ellison – Pay the Writer

[YouTubeUlar] <— 524,719 Need some balls to justify your freelance ability to do anything? Remember these words of Harlan Ellison... this is your answer.

“All you got to do is pay me. Everybody else may be an asshole but I’m not. By what right would you call me and ask me to work for nothing? Do you get a paycheck? Does your boss get a paycheck? Do you pay the telecine guy? Do you pay the camera men? Do you pay the cutters? Do you pay the teamsters when they shlep your stuff on the trucks? Would you go a gas station and ask to give you free gas? Would you go to the doctor and have them take out your spleen for nothing? How dare you call me and what me to work for nothing…

…there is no publicity value. The only value for me, is if you put money in my hand.

I don’t take a piss without getting paid for it.

I get so angry about this because you undercut by all the amateurs. It’s the amateurs who make it tough for all the professionals.”

Now that we have that clear… lets talk about some creative thinking.

EyeHandy – How to Make a Beer Bong

[Link]

For your friday HowTo video… we apply working knowledge to drinking faster.

The first beer bong we ever made in high school was named Sylvia. I remember one year we took Sylvia to lake powell with us… well it was actually more like I joined a group of three families that were going to lake powell and Sylvia was already coming. Having just graduated high school and being the odd man out – as in everyone there was related to someone – except me… it was my job to make sure that all 16 people on our houseboat that slept 12 would take a hit from Sylvia. My parents weren’t present… so I could break the silence and that is what I did.

Cheers to the lake powell crew of 1997 or 1998 – I can’t really remember. The McCormick’s + the Wolff’s + the Jones’ + 1 Hydle… what an adventure.

Now you are a celebrity

Subscribe to the good words of Seth Godin

That means that… There are people who don’t know you… and who don’t like you.

Specifically, there are people who don’t know your work, who haven’t taken the time to understand your point of view, who nonetheless have had to draw a conclusion about who you are and what you do.

“I don’t like Angelina Jolie.”

“Which movie didn’t you like?”

“Oh, I’ve never seen any of her movies. I just don’t like her.”

More positively, celebrity, particularly social media celebrity (which more and more of us have every day) earns you trust and access and an audience. Your twitter followers or friends of friends on Facebook are more likely to cut you slack because you’re not a stranger.

But it’s unreasonable to expect only the upside. There are now people in the world who don’t know you and who don’t like you. Sorry.
