FHUPPed up Eye Trip – Level 1

A couple years ago Dave Morin and I were openly talking about the inane direction of freestyle skiing and where it was going. We joked about creating a ski movie production company with a name that defined the craziest thing we could ever imagine seeing a skier do… and so, Flying Helicopters Under People Productions was formed.

FHUPP – A now common adjective for something that is ultimately crazy – has randomly shown up in nearly every film from the last couple of years… However, from my understanding, a true FHUPP has not been accomplished and I challenge anyone who may be willing to strive for it.

The latest installment of a FHUPPed up jump comes from Level 1 Productions latest park shoot at Sun Valley, Idaho.

Tom Wallisch gets inverted on one of the largest kickers I have ever seen. Click the image. Inspect for yourself. This is not small.

Just imagine the kid who guinea pigged this 110′ transfer gap – FHUPP.
ESPN Freeskiing blog has the writeup.

I can’t wait to see the actual chopper footage in Level 1’s new film “Eye Trip” due out in September. Thanks for the share Berman.

Holy F*ck!

Worlds Largest Naked Front Flip… Good find Nate Warner via JF Cusson via Jen Crichton.

From what I have gathered – Some guy named Nico Zacek throws this event called Nine Knights. Skiers (Oscar Scherlin, Henrik Harlaut, Laurent Favre, Mikael Descenaux, the best British rider Paddy Graham, and the top Austrian/German riders Fabio Studer, Thomas Hlawitschka, Martin Misof and Nico Zacek) jump the castle. Photographers (Mattias Fredriksson, Klaus Polzer, Elina Sirparanta, Yarrek) photograph the jump. And everyone parties.

Until this guy blows the wind through his balls on a massive crack open front fly to flat. Teddy Berr – I know you have balls, but are they still intact?

Ryan St.Onge = Olympic Almost Gold

Be sure to watch Ryan St.Onge win gold in freestyle aerials tonight.

We have a futurist in Vancouver who has already snapped his gold medal winning jump celebration. I shot my prediction 2 years ago. Unfortunately some jumpers behind him pushed him down to 4th – but your still first in my book.

Congratulations Ryan. Now go miss your flight home for a burrito.

Kevin Pearce at Craig Hospital

I’m not a fan of Microsoft or Silverlight – but this olympic video is worth the install. Mac’ers – don’t be scared. Windows’lugers – you probably already are.

Kevin Pearce who was an olympic hopeful and one of the only athletes that could give Shaun White a run for his money suffered a severe traumatic brain injury (TBI) on December 31st, 2009 at Park City. In early February Kevin was moved from the University of Utah Hospital to Craig Hospital in Denver, CO where he began a comprehensive TBI rehabilitation program led by Alan Weintraub, MD.

His Facebook Fan Page is now 44,000 strong and includes daily updates and an amazing amount of activity.

It is good to see such a nice production coming from NBC during the Olympics about Kevin Pearce, his family and his injury. People don’t typically understand what an amazing piece of machinery the human brain is and how complex a full recovery can be. Thanks to Tom Brokaw for getting the facts straight on this one.

This time last year I was tracking progress coming from Riley Poor during his spinal cord injury rehabilitation at Craig. I have currently been working very closely with with Craig Hopspital on a project that will go live on March 4th at their 9th annual Push Dinner.

Being associated with such an amazing place like Craig is something I can take for granted because my parents actually met working here in the 1970s. I grew up around this place and now – after taking Craig on as a client – I have found a new respect for the roots from which I have grown. It is hard to explain what Craig Hospital does. To give you an example … you will have to wait until March 5th.

Thoughts on professional skier CR Johnson

ESPN and friend – Micah Abrams writes:

“Twenty-six-year-old C.R. Johnson was killed today while skiing at Squaw Valley, Calif. According to a statement issued by the resort, the Lake Tahoe native caught an edge on exposed rocks while entering the Light Towers area above the Cornice II lift. He fell through rocks before coming to a rest several hundred yards below the entry. Ski Patrol were on the scene within minutes, but efforts to revive Johnson failed. He was reportedly wearing a helmet.” [Read Full article]

Hydle:
It is very sad to hear another icon in the sport pass away. CR dodged a bullet back in 2005 with a traumatic brain injury and now this? Very unfortunate. I highly suggest reading the words of Christopher Jerard (first link below) to not only recap the life of CR – but more importantly to familiarize yourself with how CR adapted his viewpoints about life after his injury in 2005. Very powerful words Chris. Thank you for sharing.

2009 Media Elements

In 2009 I averaged just over 69 captured media elements a day which is directly on par with the last three years.

I shot 9,582 videos and 14,304 photos on the canon. 1,421 came from the iPhone which is no longer a daily pocket device for me.

Team Visa

Olympics in the Air. Facebook caught my attention and I have consumed this years Visa Go World campaign.

It is nice to see long time friend Ryan St. Onge getting some media play around the the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympic Games.

Paralympic Sledge Hockey Player – Alexi Salamone
Alpine Skier – Julia Mancuso
Snowboard Cross – Lindsey Jacobellis
Ice Hockey – Angela Ruggiero
Freestyle Aerials – Ryan St. Onge

Two things to note about this campaign.
1 – It’s women driven.
2 – Focuses on a paralympic athlete.

Both of which should seamlessly be woven into every major ad campaign revolving the olympics and such a major sponsor.

Go Visa. Go Ryan. Go World.

Warren Miller receives Lifetime Achievement Award

January 30th, 2010

Warren Miller saves a rough start to Powder magazine’s 2010 video awards in Aspen, CO.

Warren’s concept of relating skiing to freedom has been around since the 50s – and here we are 60 years later finally soaking it in.

Working with Warren over the last year was truly an inspiring and life changing project for me. If you have yet to see Level 1 Productions 10th film – Refresh – Stop by the house and enjoy a beer along with your very own personal screening.

Little guy Level 1 was nominated for 6 awards. But following traditional patterns when dealing with large sponsor based awards ceremonies… Refresh didn’t walk with any.

Warren… I can’t wait to read the autobiography and pick up a copy of your new golf cartoon book. How long until it hits the shelf?
