Hugh MacLeod – Own It

“Owning it” means being in control of your craft. The feeling that you got successful because you earned it fair and square, not just because you got lucky.

And that can take decades. In my case, I didn’t get successful at cartooning because I was tremendously talented at it from the age of ten, I wasn’t. I got good because I liked doing it and continually wanted to get better… and kept at it for many, many years.

You can own your career, control your own destiny; You don’t have to go for the executive position.. that is unless, it is something that you really want to own.

This idea of “ownership” is very much aligned with “mastery”. It can be in art, finance, law or lawn care. It involve sacrifice, dedication and time. Is it worth it? That is for you to decide, but from where I sit, it is one of life’s great treasures.

Schui – Oktoberfest Tips

In order to receive full effectiveness of our short trip to Oktoberfest in Munich, Germany … I had to bring in the Schui for the list. My review will come soon … but for now – lets get caught up on the rules.

Then lets go TSOIGDH!

So first of all, locals call it “Wiesn” (it’s slang for meadow).

The best tents are:

Augustiner – Best tasting beer
Hacker-Pschorr – best party
all the Americans go the Hofbräu tent.
Don’t go to the Löwenbräu tent. only australians and shitty beer.

Don’t drink the last sip of the stein.
Don’t fall asleep on a beer table. they will kick you out.

on the weekend, go to the tends early (9-11am) because you won’t get a seat at a table later.

if you want to by a lederhose (leather pants, very traditional, authentic and fun) get it from “C&A”. It’s like a JC Penny or something but has the fairest prices for lederhosen.

Try the smoked fish on a stick.
try the white sausage.

take a walk at the “english garden” and check out the beer garden at the “chinese tower”

Have fun and enjoy!

Make It Happen

When I was younger, I thought love just kinda happened. You met a girl/boy, you liked him/her, he/she liked you, then suddenly BAM!!!! Fireworks and happy ever after.

Luckily (as it turns out), it doesn’t work that way. It takes effort and deliberation. You gotta be proactive. “Random” might get you laid on occasion, but that’s about it.

That being said, it’s still a very happy cartoon… #YayHappy.

Erica Gilbertson – On My Father Les

He was more than just a friend, my Uncle, a brother to my Father. I knew him as the gentle giant. Greeting me with his mountainous bear embrace and sitting on his lap to be engulfed in his brilliantly described anecdotes from start to finish. It was as if you were apart of the adventure he divulged in.

He put ketchup on his tacos. He wore a mustache better than Tom Selleck, and Ron Swanson. He gave his hand to help the world. He was more than Superman.

Music was his ecstasy, his drug of choice. He could absorb his entire attention into each tone being executed. He was a listener to musical poetry.

He rode a motorcycle and it was his vessel to his chronicles.

“Everybody believes in something. Some people believe in God. I believe in the Angels”.” ~ A Hells Angel.

Les you have always been an Angel. Now you have your wings. May you play fetch with Jackson and embark on an endless highway with the spirits.

I love you.

“I want people to look at my artwork… and see that the little things in life that people say – Hey that’s stupid. And take a look at it again and say – Hey, it’s not so stupid now that it has that filter on it.”

I Love Awesomeness – The Whale

[YouTubeUlar]

Hard to believe this “Meat Torpedo” photo is real… I know. That’s just proves how awesome this humpback whale really is.

“On our way in from fishing for halibut we noticed a few humpback whales playing in the distance and we stopped part way in to watch. It was quite an experience to see something completely airborne so close to the boat. The lucky thing was I got the photo I submitted. A fellow boat also got a picture of the whale close to mid air and it was also all caught on video. Was an amazing day.”

TOTD – Your Sliver

Hydle - You Can Not Have It All - Hugh

What I have to say:

Think about this on all aspects of life. The brands you choose, the places we choose to live and the friends and relationships we choose to be in.

Pick your sliver well … my friends. Or better yet – with business, we have the ability to create our sliver.

Lets party guys!

What Hugh MacLeod had to say:

“Usually, the deal here is, I draw a cartoon and then write something to go along with it. Some little philosophical add-on to balance it out, etc.

But I got stuck with this one.

The meaning of this cartoon is just so self-evident to me that I really don’t think adding anything will do it justice.

So I’ll just shut up now…

No. Really.”
